If your current bathroom is not safe, or you find that it is really inconvenient, it may be time to seriously look at a remodel. Then you can have the ease of use you want, and you will also not have to worry so much about slips, falls, and other concerns as you age. Especially if you live alone, falling in the shower or the bathroom can be physically devastating.
Fortunately, it is not generally that hard to widen a bathroom door. Unless it is located right up against a wall where things really can not be moved, you should be able to expand it a few inches and allow for the level of clearance you need. Which side of the door you expand does not matter. The key is getting the door frame the exact right size so that the door will close properly.
