Bending the Genre Stereotype

Here are a couple of books I’ve read recently that delighted me in unexpected ways.

1) Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card

While I read a lot of fiction, I don’t read science fiction very often. Aliens, space ships, and DNA tend to turn me off. However, Mr. Card developed his characters and story so beautifully that the location (space) didn’t matter. I give it four stars. Or maybe a galaxy.

2) Smiling Bears by Else Poulsen

I checked out this book from the library because I wanted to look up a few facts on bears. However, I started reading and couldn’t put it down. Ms. Poulsen’s experiences with bears in captivity are fascinating. I read several books about wild animals this week. While the other books were informative, this book captivated me. I’d recommend it to any animal lover.

Have you read anything lately that surprised you?
